What the extension does
When you trigger OCR on a video, the paused video frame is sent to our backend, processed locally on our server using Apple Vision, and the recognized text is returned to your browser. When you trigger translation, the recognized text fragments are sent to Google's Gemini API (through our backend) and the translations are returned.
What we collect
- Anonymous users — a randomly generated device identifier stored in your browser's extension storage, plus your IP address in standard server logs. These are used only to enforce a per-device daily OCR rate limit and to investigate abuse.
- Signed-in users (Google sign-in) — your Google account identifier, email address, name, and profile picture URL. Used for authentication, to display your profile in the extension's options page, and to associate your translation-credit balance with your account.
- Paying users — Stripe handles all card data directly; we receive only a Stripe customer ID and purchase metadata (amount, time, product). We never see or store your card number.
- Request content — every OCR request includes the video frame you asked to OCR; every translation request includes the recognized text fragments (and, if configured, your glossary). These are processed in memory and are not retained after the response is returned. No video frames, OCR results, or translations are written to our database or logs.
Who we share data with
- Google — receives your email and profile information during sign-in (OAuth). When you use translation, recognized text fragments and your glossary are sent to the Gemini API.
- Stripe — receives payment information when you buy translation credits.
- Cloudflare — proxies all traffic to our backend and therefore observes request metadata (IP, timing, URL path).
We do not sell your data. We do not share it with advertisers or data brokers. We do not use your data to train machine-learning models.
Data retention
- OCR and translation request content (video frames, recognized text, translations): not retained.
- Account data (email, profile, credit ledger): retained for as long as your account exists.
- Server access and error logs: retained for up to 30 days.
Your rights
You can delete your account and all associated data at any time by emailing matt@misosoftware.com from the address on your account. You can also request a copy of the data we hold about you.
Children
Overtext is not directed at children under 13, and we do not knowingly collect data from them.
Changes
If this policy changes in a way that affects how your data is handled, we will update the date at the top of this page and, for significant changes, notify signed-in users by email.
